As I was sitting in on a Childbirth Ed class the other night (I am working on getting certified) and watching a breastfeeding video, I couldn’t help but feel like the father’s must be feeling a tad out of place. Breastfeeding is, obviously, such a female thing. They had to be thinking “Why am I even seeing this?” “How can I help?” or “Whew! Glad SHE will be taking care of that!”   But, during all these thoughts in my head, I was taken back to 13 years ago as I began the journey to breastfeeding my twins. I had just began to learn to feed them when I was stricken by a horrible infection in my c-section incision. I had to pump and nurse, nurse and pump and it seemed to take forever to build up my supply. I was so ready to throw in the towel and would have if not for one person – my husband.  While he couldn’t do anything to physically help, his words of support were enough to help me through, to make me see how important what I was doing was for our children.   I am so thankful today that he didn’t shy away from encouraging me thinking that I would be offended since “he” didn’t have to breastfeed. So, Dad’s, you CAN help, more than you even know, just by encouraging her. Don’t be afraid that she will think you just don’t want to feed the baby, or that you don’t care how much she has to sacrifice for this. Tell how beautiful it is that she nurtures your child this way and that you appreciate it very much. (An a back rub will help, too.)
